HI Christie,

I have followed you for years on wildforwags. I am now somewhere that they have a CVS. I have been trying to shop it some to get the lay of the land and understand all the ins and outs that are different from Walgreens. Today I found some great clearance on Pantene priced 75% off for $1.24 each. I had a coupon for $3.00 two, the coupon beeped and the guy (who was really snotty about it to start with) told me I couldn’t use it because it exceeded the amount I was paying. Is this the norm for CVS. I asked him to adjust the coupon so there wouldn’t be an overage and he just glared at me. Needless to say I wasn’t able to score a great deal on them and I can’t seem to find a coupon policy on the cvs site. Any help clarifying would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there….Welcome to the world of CVS, I’m sorry that your first encounter with what could of been a great BARGAIN was ruined by a SNOTTY employee. I’ve encountered my fair share of those……I’ve shopped at CVS now for abt 3 years as a” COUPONER” and I still run into the good, bad & ugly – as it varies from store to store. Tomorrow you could go back & get another employee and the whole situation could possibly turn into a positive adventure, just wanted to say KEEP YOUR CHIN UP….better days are coming for you with shopping at CVS! I use CHRISTIE’s site here every single day, and it has helped me tremdously! Happy Holidays!

Here’s the policy http://www.cvs.com/bizcontent/general/help/coupon-policy.pdf. Here’s the relevant portion, “In the event that any item’s price is less than the value of the coupon, CVS/pharmacy will only accept the coupon only to the price of the item. CVS/pharmacy does not provide cash back in exchange for any coupons.” My CVS is great, but if I encounter this issue in a different store, I would have just added another Pantene product to my transaction, supposing there was enough stock. I figure paying less than $1 for 3 is pretty nice anyway if I don’t feel like arguing with the cashier.

I’ve had my share of ups and downs with CVS employees over the past 3 years. It’s a good idea (as suggested already) to keep a copy of CVS’ coupon policy with you, just in case. I learned (respectfully speaking) that some employees are not familiar w/their coupon policies and/or unfortunately, some will make up their own rules along the way. If I had a situation like this (and I have in the past), I would politely ask for the store mgr and privately discuss the situation. If it doesn’t work out with that store mgr, get his/her name and contact CVS customer care (phone # is on back of your CVS Extra Care card) and politely discuss your situation. Hopefully, they will take care of your inquiry and someone will follow up with a resolution to your situation soon. Good luck!

You’re lucky he even let you use it. It depends on the store manager, but a majority of CVS stores do not allow coupons with clearance items.

Thank you Jenni and Harriet, I printed the coupon policy and will carry it in my binder. I shop walgreen all the time and occasionally have gotten the rude cashier, but this guy was over the top, and I had a cart full of pop that I was paying for, no coupons, so it wasn’t like I was trying to pay nothing for a cart of stuff. I’ll just chalk it up to an unhappy employee who should probably be working somewhere else and not in a customer service job.

Tammy, CVS doesn’t give overage, they just adjust the coupon down to the price of the item. The only store that I know of that states they will take overage in their coupon policy is Walmart 🙂

It sounds like you had an employee who doesn’t like their job. I agree, have your coupon policy with you.

I have been finding that if I try to use a manufacture coupon on a clearance item , it beeps and the employees are telling me you can’t use them on clearance. When I told the employee the coupon doesn’t say it excludes clearance, they push it through , but not happily. On another note, my store now takes expired ecb’s and they never used to. Go figure in this crazy coupon world. YMMV.
